Geopolymer-based products can exhibit excellent mechanical properties (high compressive strengths and good abrasion resistance), chemical properties (resistance to acid attacks) and thermal properties (low thermal conductivity). These properties mean that these materials can be very attractive products for applications in the construction industry, such as flooring blocks insulating panels. When compared with the common polystyrene panels used for the purpose of obtaining good thermal (and acoustic) insulation house or any building walls, the new panels produced from masks embedded in the geopolymer matrix will be stronger, more durable over time and completely recyclable.

Recycling in geopolymer matrices thus consists of an upcycling type application of mask waste, otherwise destined for landfill or subjected to incineration with the production of high grade materials. Thus, there is not only an environmental advantage over other recycling options, but also economic benefits, because it would be possible to establish a new green production by means of a local industrial synergy, easily replicated anywhere.
